Tobacco warnings on retail packs will do

Reviewing rules, the Union Health Ministry has now made it permissible to display specified health warnings just on retail packages of tobacco products.
Following a representation from industry federations, the Ministry has clarified that the warnings need not be displayed on packages such as gunny bags. The rules have further been modified to allow specified health warnings as per the language used on the pack. However, if more than one language is used on the pack, the warning shall appear in two languages – one in which the brand name appears and the other in the local language of the area where the product is sold.
The rules on Packaging & Labelling of Tobacco Products came into force from November 30, 2008. The amendment rules largely redress the grievances of industry associations including the All- India Bidi Industries Federation, says a Ministry statement. Read more
